20 This is the latest stable release of Samba. This is the version
21 that production Samba servers should be running for all current
22 bug-fixes. This is a substantial upgrade from previous Samba
23 3.0.x releases. Please read the section "What happened to 3.0.15 -
24 3.0.19?" and the other major change descriptions.
26 Additional features introduced in Samba 3.0.20 include:

50 After some discussion it was deemed that the amount of changes
51 going into the next Samba 3.0 release needed something to catch
52 people's attention. Skipping several releases was chosen as
53 the best solution with the least overhead. There will be no
54 3.0.15 - 3.0.19 ever released. The next production release
55 following 3.0.20 should be 3.0.21.

63 Asynchronous Winbind Implementation
64 ===================================
66 Winbindd has been completely rewritten in this release to support
67 an almost completely non-blocking, asynchronous request/reply
68 model. This means that winbindd will scale much better in
69 large domain environments and on high latency networks. Neither
70 the client interface nor the command line tools (i.e. wbinfo) have
71 changed in their calling conventions or syntax. However, due to
72 internal structure changes, it is required (more so than normal)
73 that you install the nss_winbind.so library included in this release.
76 Support for Microsoft Print Migrator
77 ====================================
79 Samba 3.0.20 includes full support for migrating printers from
80 Windows servers or other Samba servers via the Microsoft Print
81 Migrator tool. Restoring printers requires a working "add printer
82 command" defined in smb.conf. Current support also allows
83 administrators to create a master list of printer drivers which
84 can be restored in bulk on new (or existing) Samba installations.
87 Asynchronous IO Support
88 =======================
90 Experimental support for async IO has been added to smbd for
91 certain platforms. To enable this new feature, Samba must be
92 compiled to include the --with-aio-support configure option.
93 In addition, the "aio read size" and "aio write size" to non-zero
94 values. See the smb.conf(5) man page for more details on these

4730 The following issues are known changes in behavior between Samba 2.2 and
4731 Samba 3.0 that may affect certain installations of Samba.
4733 1) When operating as a member of a Windows domain, Samba 2.2 would
4734 map any users authenticated by the remote DC to the 'guest account'
4735 if a uid could not be obtained via the getpwnam() call. Samba 3.0
4736 rejects the connection as NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE. There is no
4737 current work around to re-establish the 2.2 behavior.
4739 2) When adding machines to a Samba 2.2 controlled domain, the
4740 'add user script' was used to create the UNIX identity of the
4741 machine trust account. Samba 3.0 introduces a new 'add machine
4742 script' that must be specified for this purpose. Samba 3.0 will
4743 not fall back to using the 'add user script' in the absence of
4744 an 'add machine script'
4747 ######################################################################
4748 Passdb Backends and Authentication
4749 ##################################
4751 There have been a few new changes that Samba administrators should be
4752 aware of when moving to Samba 3.0.
4754 1) encrypted passwords have been enabled by default in order to
4755 inter-operate better with out-of-the-box Windows client
4756 installations. This does mean that either (a) a samba account
4757 must be created for each user, or (b) 'encrypt passwords = no'
4758 must be explicitly defined in smb.conf.
4760 2) Inclusion of new 'security = ads' option for integration
4761 with an Active Directory domain using the native Windows
4762 Kerberos 5 and LDAP protocols.
4764 MIT kerberos 1.3.1 supports the ARCFOUR-HMAC-MD5 encryption
4765 type which is neccessary for servers on which the
4766 administrator password has not been changed, or kerberos-enabled
4767 SMB connections to servers that require Kerberos SMB signing.
4768 Besides this one difference, either MIT or Heimdal Kerberos
4769 distributions are usable by Samba 3.0.
4772 Samba 3.0 also includes the possibility of setting up chains
4773 of authentication methods (auth methods) and account storage
4774 backends (passdb backend). Please refer to the smb.conf(5)
4775 man page for details. While both parameters assume sane default
4776 values, it is likely that you will need to understand what the
4777 values actually mean in order to ensure Samba operates correctly.
4779 The recommended passdb backends at this time are
4781 * smbpasswd - 2.2 compatible flat file format
4782 * tdbsam - attribute rich database intended as an smbpasswd
4783 replacement for stand alone servers
4784 * ldapsam - attribute rich account storage and retrieval
4785 backend utilizing an LDAP directory.
4786 * ldapsam_compat - a 2.2 backward compatible LDAP account
4789 Certain functions of the smbpasswd(8) tool have been split between the
4790 new smbpasswd(8) utility, the net(8) tool, and the new pdbedit(8)
4791 utility. See the respective man pages for details.
4794 ######################################################################
4798 This section outlines the new features affecting Samba / LDAP
4804 A new object class (sambaSamAccount) has been introduced to replace
4805 the old sambaAccount. This change aids us in the renaming of
4806 attributes to prevent clashes with attributes from other vendors.
4807 There is a conversion script (examples/LDAP/convertSambaAccount) to
4808 modify and LDIF file to the new schema.

4817 The <DOM SID> can be obtained by running 'net getlocalsid
4818 <DOMAINNAME>' on the Samba PDC as root. The changetype determines
4819 the format of the generated LDIF output--either create new entries
4820 or modify existing entries.
4822 The old sambaAccount schema may still be used by specifying the
4823 "ldapsam_compat" passdb backend. However, the sambaAccount and
4824 associated attributes have been moved to the historical section of
4825 the schema file and must be uncommented before use if needed.
4826 The 2.2 object class declaration for a sambaAccount has not changed
4827 in the 3.0 samba.schema file.
4829 Other new object classes and their uses include:
4831 * sambaDomain - domain information used to allocate rids
4832 for users and groups as necessary. The attributes are added
4833 in 'ldap suffix' directory entry automatically if
4834 an idmap uid/gid range has been set and the 'ldapsam'
4835 passdb backend has been selected.
4837 * sambaGroupMapping - an object representing the
4838 relationship between a posixGroup and a Windows
4839 group/SID. These entries are stored in the 'ldap
4840 group suffix' and managed by the 'net groupmap' command.
4842 * sambaUnixIdPool - created in the 'ldap idmap suffix' entry
4843 automatically and contains the next available 'idmap uid' and
4846 * sambaIdmapEntry - object storing a mapping between a
4847 SID and a UNIX uid/gid. These objects are created by the
4848 idmap_ldap module as needed.
4850 * sambaSidEntry - object representing a SID alone, as a Structural
4851 class on which to build the sambaIdmapEntry.
4854 New Suffix for Searching
4855 ------------------------
4857 The following new smb.conf parameters have been added to aid in directing
4858 certain LDAP queries when 'passdb backend = ldapsam://...' has been
4861 * ldap suffix - used to search for user and computer accounts
4862 * ldap user suffix - used to store user accounts
4863 * ldap machine suffix - used to store machine trust accounts
4864 * ldap group suffix - location of posixGroup/sambaGroupMapping entries
4865 * ldap idmap suffix - location of sambaIdmapEntry objects
4867 If an 'ldap suffix' is defined, it will be appended to all of the
4868 remaining sub-suffix parameters. In this case, the order of the suffix
4869 listings in smb.conf is important. Always place the 'ldap suffix' first
4872 Due to a limitation in Samba's smb.conf parsing, you should not surround
4873 the DN's with quotation marks.
4879 Samba 3.0 supports an ldap backend for the idmap subsystem. The
4880 following options would inform Samba that the idmap table should be
4881 stored on the directory server onterose in the "ou=idmap,dc=plainjoe,

4891 This configuration allows winbind installations on multiple servers to
4892 share a uid/gid number space, thus avoiding the interoperability problems
4893 with NFS that were present in Samba 2.2.

4898 Trust Relationships and a Samba Domain
4899 ######################################
4901 Samba 3.0.0beta2 is able to utilize winbindd as the means of
4902 allocating uids and gids to trusted users and groups. More
4903 information regarding Samba's support for establishing trust
4904 relationships can be found in the Samba-HOWTO-Collection included
4905 in the docs/ directory of this release.
4907 First create your Samba PDC and ensure that everything is
4908 working correctly before moving on the trusts.
4910 To establish Samba as the trusting domain (named SAMBA) from a Windows NT
4911 4.0 domain named WINDOWS:
4913 1) create the trust account for SAMBA in "User Manager for Domains"
4914 2) connect the trust from the Samba domain using
4915 'net rpc trustdom establish GLASS'
4917 To create a trustlationship with SAMBA as the trusted domain:
4919 1) create the initial trust account for GLASS using
4920 'smbpasswd -a -i GLASS'. You may need to create a UNIX
4921 account for GLASS$ prior to this step (depending on your
4922 local configuration).
4923 2) connect the trust from a WINDOWS DC using "User Manager
4926 Now join winbindd on the Samba PDC to the SAMBA domain using
4927 the normal steps for adding a Samba server to an NT4 domain:
4928 (note that smbd & nmbd must be running at this point)

4933 Start winbindd and test the join with 'wbinfo -t'.
4935 Now test the trust relationship by connecting to the SAMBA DC

4950 Beginning with Samba3.0.0beta3, winbindd has been given new account
4951 manage functionality equivalent to the 'add user script' family of
4952 smb.conf parameters. The idmap design has also been changed to
4953 centralize control of foreign SID lookups and matching to UNIX
4957 Brief Description of Changes
4958 ----------------------------
4960 1) The sid_to_uid() family of functions (smbd/uid.c) have been
4961 reverted to the 2.2.x design. This means that when resolving a
4962 SID to a UID or similar mapping:
4964 a) First consult winbindd
4965 b) perform a local lookup only if winbindd fails to
4966 return a successful answer
4968 There are some variations to this, but these two rules generally
4971 2) All idmap lookups have been moved into winbindd. This means that
4972 a server must run winbindd (and support NSS) in order to achieve
4973 any mappings of SID to dynamically allocated UNIX ids. This was
4974 a conscious design choice.
4976 3) (OBSOLETE) New functions have been added to winbindd to emulate
4977 the 'add user script' family of smbd functions without requiring
4978 that external scripts be defined. This functionality is controlled
4979 by the 'winbind enable local accounts' smb.conf parameter (enabled
4982 However, this account management functionality is only supported
4983 in a local tdb (winbindd_idmap.tdb). If these new UNIX accounts
4984 must be shared among multiple Samba servers (such as a PDC and BDCs),
4985 it will be necessary to define your own 'add user script', et. al.
4986 programs that place the accounts/groups in some form of directory
4987 such as NIS or LDAP. This requirement was deemed beyond the scope
4988 of winbind's account management functions. Solutions for
4989 distributing UNIX system information have been deployed and tested
4990 for many years. We saw no need to reinvent the wheel.
4992 4) A member of a Samba controlled domain running winbindd is now able
4993 to map domain users directly onto existing UNIX accounts while still
4994 automatically creating accounts for trusted users and groups. This
4995 behavior is controlled by the 'winbind trusted domains only' smb.conf
4996 parameter (disabled by default to provide 2.2.x winbind behavior).
4998 5) Group mapping support is wrapped in the local_XX_to_XX() functions
4999 in smbd/uid.c. The reason that group mappings are not included
5000 in winbindd is because the purpose of Samba's group map is to
5001 match any Windows SID with an existing UNIX group. These UNIX
5002 groups can be created by winbindd (see next section), but the
5003 SID<->gid mapping is retreived by smbd, not winbindd.
5009 * security = server running winbindd to allocate accounts on demand
5011 * Samba PDC running winbindd to handle the automatic creation of UNIX
