  11 Michael is one of the main developers of Samba (www.samba.org),
  12 specializing on file serving and clustering. He is a
  13 principal software engineer in Red Hat's Storage Server
  14 team. He has previously presented at the Linux Plumbers
  15 Conference and the LinuxCon Europe and is a regular
  16 speaker at the sambaXP conference and the Storage
  17 Developer Conference.

  21 Samba is the most important open source SMB file serving
  22 software, and arguably, one of the most important SMB
  23 implementations out there. While the Active Directory Server
  24 features has attracted a lot of attention with the release of
  25 Samba 4.0 in 2012, a lot is currently happening in Samba's file
  26 server in the last couple of years.

  28 One of the most active areas of development is version 3 of the
  29 SMB protocol, introduced by Microsoft to move focus from pure
  30 workstation workload to server workload. SMB3 adds an abundance
  31 of new features to the protocol.  In particular, Microsoft
  32 catches up with Samba/CTDB to offer all-active clustering.

  34 After an overview of the state of Samba's file server, this talk
  35 presents the progress of SMB3 support in Samba and in particular
  36 explains the challenges faced. Special emphasis is put on the
  37 state of Multi-Channel and RDMA support aka SMB Direct.
